STEMfest Leeds

A visit to STEMfest Leeds was a fantastic success, with all of our students having an enjoyable, inspiring and memorable day. The event provided an excellent opportunity for students to experience STEM beyond the classroom and see how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are applied in everyday businesses and industries.

Throughout the day, students met employers, industry professionals and apprentices, gaining valuable careers advice and learning about the many pathways available to them. They were able to see how STEM skills are used to solve real-world problems and explore the wide range of careers available within the sector.

Students participated in a variety of exciting, hands-on workshops. They experienced the Planetarium, where they were taken on an incredible journey through space, inspiring curiosity about astronomy and space exploration. During the Quickline Telecommunications workshop, students learned how broadband is installed, from the engineers working on the external network through to the final connection inside the home. They then took on the challenge of installing broadband themselves, with Sara and Marwa being crowned the winning team.

Throughout the event, students also designed and built their own wind turbines, with Jack being crowned winner (pictured with teddy), constructed cranes, and took part in a Mars rover simulation, testing their engineering, teamwork and problem-solving skills. These interactive activities encouraged creativity, resilience and critical thinking while demonstrating how STEM is used to overcome real engineering challenges.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to apply their learning, develop confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities available within STEM industries. Events like STEMfest help raise aspirations by connecting classroom learning with real careers and innovations that shape our world.

A huge thank you to the organisers, exhibitors and workshop leaders for delivering such an engaging and inspiring event. It was a truly fantastic day, and both students and staff are already looking forward to attending the next STEMfest.
