Strengthening Community Connections: Residents Come Together for Eid Lunch

We were delighted to host our first-ever Community Eid Lunch at the Academy, where we were greatly pleased to welcome a wide range of guests from the local community to celebrate this special occasion.

Eid al-Fitr is a significant Islamic festival marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. It is a time of celebration, communal prayers, feasting, giving to charity, and expressing gratitude for the strength to observe fasting and for blessings received throughout the month. Muslims around the world mark the festival of Eid by joining family, friends and neighbours for celebrations.

Eighty guests from the local community were invited to the event. Among the guests were residents from Thornhill, Thornhill Lees, and Savile Town; faith leaders representing both Christian and Muslim communities in the local area; and the Member of Parliament for Dewsbury and Batley, Iqbal Mohamed.

Guests were welcomed to the Academy by Mrs Rudd, Assistant Headteacher, who told us: "Today's gathering is a wonderful opportunity for us to share not only food, but also friendship and understanding. Events like this remind us of the importance of strong, supportive communities where people of all backgrounds feel welcomed, valued, and connected. By coming together, learning from one another, and celebrating our differences as well as our shared values, we help build a community that is kinder, more inclusive, and stronger for everyone."

Academy students then spoke about the meaning of Eid and how they had celebrated the festival. Following the speeches, guests enjoyed lunch before taking part in an Eid quiz led by our students.

We are most grateful to our staff and students who volunteered to assist with the event, making it a huge success, and without whose support it would not have been possible.  It was a fabulous team effort, and we are delighted that the Community Eid Lunch was well received by those attending.
