We were delighted to host our first-ever Community Iftar at the Academy, where we were greatly pleased to welcome students and their parents as our guests for this special occasion. A Community Iftar, typically held during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, is a gathering where Muslims come together to break their fast at sunset. It is not only a religious observance but also a social event where people from diverse backgrounds, including Muslims and non-Muslims, come together to share food, conversation, and community spirit.
A group of student representatives and prefects of the Academy were keen to take up the opportunity to meet with local councillor for Dewsbury South, Jackie Ramsey, when she visited the Academy to speak about local issues relevant to young people and address questions that they raised about matters that affect them in the community.
A group of Year 9 students were thrilled to go on a visit to Kirklees College, Dewsbury, where they were able to participate in an inspiring morning of hands-on learning. The educational journey took place in the prestigious Pioneer Higher Skills Centre, where students immersed themselves in various workshops aimed at broadening their horizons and providing valuable insights into potential future career paths.
A group of Academy students were delighted to have had the privilege of participating in the esteemed Shakespeare Schools Festival, when they showcased their adaptation of the timeless classic, Macbeth, in The Studio at Bradford Alhambra. This remarkable achievement was the culmination of months of dedication, creativity, and collaboration amongst our talented students.
Our Year 10 students valued the learning opportunities gained from our SMSC day when they spent the whole day off from their normal timetable in order to take part in a number of activities aimed at developing their awareness of issues related to their Spiritual Moral Social Cultural Development.
We are thrilled to share the resounding success of a recent workshop at TCA, where students immersed themselves in the creative process of crafting our upcoming Shakespeare production of Macbeth. Collaborating with a facilitator from the esteemed Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation, our students received valuable guidance to design and create their play.
We are hosting our first ever Iftar on the evening of Thursday 14th March 2024. This is a perfect opportunity for parents and students to gain an insight into why our fellow Muslim students fast during the month of Ramadan. The Iftar event is open to all students and families (Muslim and non-Muslim) in every year group. Doors open at 5:15pm, the event will begin at 5:30pm, fast opens at 6:13pm, followed by a prayer (for those who wish to). The event will culminate with the opportunity for all attendees to join together for a hot meal.
In a bid to enrich the academic experience gained in the classroom, students from the Year 11 GCSE Religious Studies group went on a visit to Bradford Cathedral and the Muhammadi Masjid. The trip, organised by Mrs Rudd, provided students with first-hand experience of the Christian and Islamic faiths studied as part of their GCSE course.
We are delighted to report that our newly-formed Thornhill Community Academy band gave their debut performance this week, spreading festive cheer with some classic Christmas tunes for the residents and staff of Field Head Court.
Academy catering staff embraced the festive season by donning colourful Christmas outfits while serving up a delightful Christmas lunch for staff and students alike.
Students were delighted by the fabulous opportunity to join a presentation from BBC staff when the BBC Bitesize’s Schools Tour made a visit to the Academy. After technicians had set up the hall to resemble a studio, sessions were conducted by host presenter Ross Fiddes who interviewed three celebrity panellists in front of the student audience.
