Academy Students Engage in Life-Saving Skills at Dewsbury Fire Station's 'Sharp Response' Event

A group of students from the Academy were most enthusiastic to take part in an educational youth event at Dewsbury Fire Station. West Yorkshire Fire Service ran a Targeted Intervention Day with their Youth Interventions Team, called 'Sharp Response'. The purpose of the day was to educate and inform students about the consequences of anti-social behaviour and its effect on the emergency services and the community.
Upon arriving at the fire station, the students were equipped with personal protective equipment before taking a tour of the facilities. During practical exercises led by fire officers, the students learned how to roll out, connect, and roll up hoses, as well as how to attach them to a hydrant.
Once the hoses were connected to the water supply, the students experienced using them as part of a team competition in which they had to work together to direct the water spray at plastic cones.
In a further session, students learnt essential first aid skills for assisting someone seriously injured in a knife crime incident.
The event was organised by the Academy's Student Support Manager, Mrs Whittaker, who told us: "The students all worked well together throughout the day and asked some excellent, thought-provoking questions."
We are most grateful to the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for inviting our students to take part in this excellent initiative.
