Celebrating our Fifth Annual Restart a Heart Day with Lifesaving CPR Training

This year, as we host our annual training event, we proudly celebrate a significant milestone for the Academy: our fifth year of participating in Restart a Heart Day, a national initiative aimed at equipping young people with essential CPR skills. Organised in collaboration with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS), this annual event continues to grow in impact and importance, enhancing the safety and well-being of our community.

The event has been strengthened over the years through the support of dedicated volunteers who have contributed their time and expertise at the Academy. We are especially grateful for the long-standing support of Imran and Michelle, who have taken part in all five years of the program. Their positive experiences at Thornhill have inspired them to enrol their own children here.

Coming to this school every year is something I look forward to. Watching the students engage and grow in confidence is amazing it's one of the reasons I chose this school for my own children.

This is about more than just CPR it's about building a connection with the next generation. I'm proud to be a part of it every year.

This year, we are delighted to welcome back Nathan, a former student, who returned to share his knowledge and give back to the community that played a pivotal role in his development.

Coming back to my old school to teach CPR has been a full-circle moment. It feels great to give back to a place that gave me so much.

We are also thankful for returning volunteers Humera and Arfan, who have joined the initiative for the third consecutive year. Their consistent involvement highlights the strength of the partnerships that make this training possible.

Throughout the years, hundreds of students have benefited from this hands-on CPR training, equipping them with the confidence and competence to respond effectively in real-life emergencies. The participation of Yorkshire Ambulance Service volunteers adds invaluable real-world expertise, bridging the gap between classroom learning and community responsibility.

Each year, the event has been organised by Science Teacher, Mrs Patel. She told us: "As teachers, we see beyond the classroom our role is to better the lives of our students in every way we can. Restart a Heart Day gives us the chance to do exactly that. Teaching CPR gives students a real sense of purpose, and it could one day mean the difference between life and death. This is one of the most important things we do all year."

As we reflect on the past five years, the impact of Restart a Heart Day is clear: it not only teaches important lifesaving skills but also fosters a culture of care and preparedness within the Academy and the local community.
