Academy Students Shine at Industrial Cadets Event, Winning Teamwork and People's Choice Awards

A group of enthusiastic Year 8 and Year 9 students from the Academy interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM subjects) had the exciting opportunity to attend the Engineering Development Trust's Industrial Cadets celebration event, held at Sheffield Hallam University.

Before attending the event, the students collaborated on a project at school, researching and developing a concept for an eco-friendly theme park. Once at the University, they met with industry leaders and presented their work and ideas. Their presentations were shared with students from other schools across the Yorkshire region who were also participating in the event. Whilst at the University, our students had the opportunity to tour the high-tech facilities on offer to those who study there.

This was the first time that students from the Academy had taken part in the initiative, and the feedback from industry leaders was exemplary.

Assessing the work of the students, Graham Shaw of VolkerRail told us: "The team at Thornhill should be really proud of their efforts and with everything that they have achieved within the Industrial Cadets Project. Myself and the other assessors were in agreement that this team have produced a project of real quality and should be rewarded as such."

As a result, the team won two awards: the Teamwork Award and the People's Choice Award.

Congratulations to our students who have taken part in this project. We are delighted by your success.
