Library Information

The library is contained in a modern purpose-built space with the capacity to accommodate 70 students. The library offers a welcoming environment for individual study, class activities and leisure reading.

The library is open every day during term time.  Students use the library as part of planned lesson activities.  Additionally, the library is available for students to undertake self-directed study or personal reading during break and lunchtime.  Students may also use the library before and after school.

The library provides books, journals, newspapers and digital sources to support the curriculum, develop wider reading, encourage awareness of current affairs and prepare students for life beyond the Academy through careers and university resources.  Students also have access to computers and printing facilities.

Additionally, a wide range of fiction and general reading materials are provided.  New titles are frequently purchased and added to the collection throughout the year.  Books are selected to cater for a wide range of reading abilities, differing tastes, gender and cultural appeal.

All students in years 7, 8 and 9 have regular library visits during their English lessons throughout the academic year.  Through a structured programme of library lessons, students are taught how to become effective and confident users of the library’s resources and digital services.  They are also introduced to new and suitable fiction titles to encourage and maintain a strong reading habit and to broaden their horizons in terms of their choice of literature.  During each library visit students are provided with the opportunity to exchange library books. Students are encouraged to borrow books for personal reading and for structured reading with lessons.
