Carnegie School Mental Health Award

At the Academy we are working towards achieving the Carnegie School Mental Health Award through Leeds Beckett University.  This award shows our commitment to mental health and emotional wellbeing and will be a great accolade.  In order to achieve the award, all members of the school community need to work together.

We are really pleased that Mrs Sahera Patel, one of our governors, was enthusiastic about completing the governor aspect of the award.  As our Safeguarding and Wellbeing governor, it’s so important that she has the knowledge to both challenge and support us with our mental health provision.

Sahera told us: “As the governor responsible for Safeguarding and Wellbeing, I attend meetings and visit the school to understand how Thornhill helps our students with their mental health and wellbeing.”

“Myself and Miss Holmes regularly discuss how needs are identified and the systems that are in place to empower students and of course, any other members of the school team, who need support.  Teaching and learning can only be successfully achieved if our students and staff members feel positive and confident within themselves.  Our school supports this philosophy and I am happy to say that we have all the systems in place to practically help students move towards a better understanding and acceptance of themselves.”

“I recently completed the Carnegie Mental Health and Well-being Lead Governor module – a course that helped me to ask further questions regarding the provision of mental health support in our school.  I was able to understand the needs of the students better as well as focus on the importance of mental health amongst the staff.  I am proud to have completed it and feel better equipped to support our school.”

If you are a parent or carer of one of our students and you would like to be involved in helping us to achieve the award then please email nicola.holmes@sharemat.co.uk
